Caroline Wong - Artist Statement Photosculpture

My two dreams: giant field of flowers and cut-off childhood memories. My two nightmares: drowning and darkness. For the flower dream, I took pictures of a bunch of flowers from a gardening centre in Wal-Mart. I edited the photos so that the colourful petals would stand out among the background. For my childhood photo, I plan on printing out a black and white baby photo of myself. To retain nostalgic atmosphere, this photo will not be edited. For my drowning nightmare, I plan to take pictures of water (specifically an aquarium) and a photo of an arm reaching out. For my darkness nightmare, I plan on taking a bunch of photos of the sky at different times of the day, going from light to dark.

To make my flower photos sculptural, I folded the photos into lily origami and made a cylinder vase out of leaves. For my childhood photo, I plan on cutting the photo to symbolize the literal “cut-off” of memories/dreams. For my drowning nightmare, I plan to make some sort of pond/pool 3D shape and placing the arm in the centre, representing the grasp for air/life. For my darkness picture, I plan to fold the different sky photos into flat “ninja stars” and placing them to make a gradient collage.

For my flower photo sculpture, I liked how the folding turned out and that the lilies actually look like lilies. What I didn’t like was the vase and how it was just a simple cylindrical shape. For my childhood photo, I liked how the pieces hung from string to create a spilling effect. However, I didn’t like how the pieces spun around while being hung.

"Lowercase"

For this photo, I photographed my friends outdoors climbing a wall and sitting on a bench. The keyboard was photographed indoors. I adjusted the size of the models and edited the lighting, contrast, colours, and shadows of the original model photos to match the keyboard background.

Portfolio

My work is a collection of different photo themes such as levitation, iconic items (umbrella or clothing), and fashion collages. With influences as diverse as everyday youth and the inspiration of those from the online community, my work is created. Ever since I had taken interest in photography I have been fascinated by the different perspectives of human nature by different photographers. What starts out as an idea inspired by other photographers or artists becomes molded into my own work. As subtle forms become transformed through calm and graceful practice, the viewer is left with a glimpse of a peaceful creation.

Photo Sketch 4: Rain

This photo was taken in Hong Kong in a beach area. The one day intended for a photoshoot was the only unexpected rainy day.
