Proposal Form
Assignment: Photography Summative
Description: A collection of flowers
(specifically pink and red carnations) encased in a block of ice or other ice
forms taken behind a black background with a spotlight. Other forms include:
- Cubes
- Vases
- Bowl
- Reef
- Tubs
Originally,
I had planned on shooting flower and pastry arrangements. After looking at the
recent Esopus magazine, I saw darker, grungy photos of flowers and decided they
were more appealing to my taste. So I decided to put a new spin on the two
floral pieces and freeze them.
Equipment:
- DSLR Camera
- Black backdrop
- Some sort of spot light
- Various containers
- Freezer
- Flowers
Location: Indoors, either basement or
dining room, during night time.
Artist Statement:
Preserved Beauty
The theme of my photos is still life. Flowers usually wilt
and die so why not preserve them? Basically, my photographs are of flowers
frozen in different kinds of containers such as an ice cream tub and an ice
cube tray. After freezing them, I arranged the ice pieces on a black backdrop
lit them up with a bright spot light. These photos can be viewed in many
different ways. They can be a mockery of Canada’s bi-polar weather or just an
eye-pleasing aesthetic piece. But from my perspective, freezing the flowers
meant preserving their beauty which can relate to people trying to preserve
their youth. At the end of the day, I found my work to have successful components
for example, aesthetically pleasing in general. But there were also some
challenges. For example, it took a really long time for the ice to melt the way
I wanted it to (to reveal flowers more). So this piece was very time-consuming.
Curatorial
Considerations
If I were to put on a show, I would frame each photo in a
dark room with a spot lamp over each photo. Each photo would have a small
caption just under its frame. Also, it would be interesting to have actual
frozen flowers kept in some sort of freezer case displayed around the works.
